For the last 25 years, I have been the director of advising and admissions for UND's School of Communication, retiring in May, 2008. Loving my retirement every day!
After graduating from Central in '61 -- like we all did! -- I went on to UND where I got my B.A. in Journalism and was hired as the director of the Northern Interscholastic Press Association until 1992 when I became the School's professional adviser. After working there for 25 years, I retired the same month that I hit the ripe old age of 65!

My husband, Marlowe, died suddenly in 1988, of heart complications. He was just 50 years old, and seemed to be in good health, so needless to say, it was a bit of a surprise.

Our only child, Kelly, graduated from UND in Broadcast Journalism, in 1994 and went on to get her Master's from Arizona shortly after that. She married Ron Madison in 1997 and Ron's son, Tyler, joined in their family then. Tyler is now in his first year of college. He's a neat kid and being his grandma is a joy.

I'm still getting used to retirement and my goal is to keep doing what I'm doing, which is a lot of nothing in importance -- and lovin' it! I do critiquing school newspapers (college and high school) for Columbia University in New York. That keeps my hand in the journalism area and although it's a lot of work, it's neat to get a new perspective on what kids are up to these days. Be afraid...be very afraid!!!! (just kidding...I think!)

I sure hope I'll be able to attend the reunion next year. It would be great to see everyone from our "days of yore"!

School Story:

One of my favorite memories of life in Central was sitting in Ida Gantner's Biology class first thing in the morning. She would choose one lucky (?!) guy to take an empty pail, walk to the Red River and scoop up some water for her fish tank! I can still recall the stink from that tank! I think she enjoyed seeing us all gag because of it!
Then there was the infamous, "cutting up the frog" day. Ugh! That was the reason I majored in journalism -- and not biology -- at UND!

I was so sorry to hear about Shannon's passing. We first met in the early 50's when we were both singing on the Saturday morning radio show sponsored by Cox's Bakery. She was just the sweetest girl, cute as a bug's ear, and such a talented singer and dancer. Shannon's mom was just the neatest lady. She always sewed Shannon the greatest costumes for her many, many dance recitals, etc.
Shannon and I really became friends when we both started attending Valley Junior HIgh School. I frequently played the piano for her when she was asked to entertain at various school or communities. Later on, we wereoften invited to sing at the same events, so in addition to our individual tunes, we sang a few duets. "Good News" was our favorite! We would usually rehearse at her house and her mom, who was an excellent piano player, would give us some coaching and fix us delicious snacks. Her mom was about as big as a minute and just the nicest lady.

It was just a treat to see Shannon at out 50th reunion. We had a chance to reminisce a bit and also to talk about where our lives had taken us since "the old days." I knew Shannon's husband, Marlowe, from our days in the early 60's when we both were part of "John Stone and the Pebble's" band. Marlowe was the talented piano player "Pebble" and just a tremendously funny guy. I was the vocal "Pebble." Some years later, when I learned that Marlowe and Shannon had married, I was so excited to see that two such neat, talented people had found each other.

I know that Shannon will be remembered fondly and missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was just the nicest, nicest person.

My deepest condolences to Kelly and all the family.
